Typography 1

Whether working in print, interaction and web design, or motion graphics, type is an essential design element that can powerfully impact a visual message. This class will cover the fundamentals of typography. Through a combination of lecture and in-class exercises students will develop an understanding of how to purposefully select and use type for more effective visual communication.

Topics will include: letter form anatomy; type classifications; the relevance of historical context; typeface selection and combinations; optical adjustments and manipulation; aspects and impact of form; hierarchy; introduction to the grid, legibility rules and rule-breaking; integrating type and image; legal issues with typefaces / fonts.

Prerequisite: None, but knowledge of the computer and graphics is highly recommended.
